Despite the dietary importance of the cereal grain, little is known about the micronutrient loading during grain development. In the study we investigated spatial patterns of zinc and iron accumulation in grain occurring over time in two barley lines with contrasting grain zinc concentrations. Such knowledge is important for the identification of tissue-specific bottlenecks in grain loading and to enable biofortification via targeted genetic intervention. F2 colleagues Paula Pongrac, Katarina Vogel-Mikuš, Mitja Kelemen, Primož Vavpetič, Primož Pelicon and Iztok Arčon were contributing to the article.
