A new study published in Physical Review Letters Journal by Janez Turnšek and his colleagues reports the first observation of amplified spontaneous emission from helium atoms in a special doubly excited state. Normally, these atoms decay almost entirely without photon emission, but under the right pressure and laser conditions, the faint glow was amplified into a strong, detectable signal. The discovery, achieved by researchers from the Jožef Stefan Institute and international collaborators, provides new insight into how atoms behave under extreme conditions of light and pressure.
