A new wind is blowing in the F2 Department

As of the beginning of June 2025, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Matjaž Kavčič has taken over the leadership of the department, marking the start of his first four-year term. After many years of successful leadership, Prof. Dr. Primož Pelicon stepped down from this role at his own request. He will continue his work as the head of the infrastructure center and as a researcher within the department.

Dr. Kavčič’s field of work includes fundamental research in atomic and molecular physics, as well as the development and application of analytical X-ray spectroscopic techniques using synchrotron radiation. He also successfully combines X-ray spectroscopy with analytical methods involving accelerated ions, conducted at the local ion accelerator. His research is carried out at synchrotron facilities in Europe and the United States, in collaboration with numerous research groups both domestically and internationally. He has published the results of his work in approximately one hundred scientific articles in renowned international journals, which have been cited over a thousand times. Dr. Kavčič is a member of the editorial board of the international journal X-ray Spectrometry and also serves on the international advisory board of the European Conference on X-ray Spectrometry (EXRS).
