European Parliament Member Matej Tonin Visits the Microanalytical Centre (MIC)

On 8 June 2026, Member of the European Parliament Matej Tonin visited the Jožef Stefan Institute, where he was introduced to the Institute’s activities, research in the fields of nuclear technologies, robotics, and artificial intelligence, as well as its role in advancing these strategic areas.
For our department, the most significant part of the visit was the tour of the Tandetron ion accelerator. Dr. Primož Pelicon, Head of the Microanalytical Centre, presented the operation of the facility, which enables cutting-edge materials research using ion beams. He introduced Mr. Tonin to research activities in the fields of advanced materials, environmental studies, cultural heritage, and nuclear technologies, as well as to the international projects and collaborations in which the Centre is actively involved. The Tandetron is one of Slovenia’s key research infrastructures and makes an important contribution to the visibility of Slovenian scientific expertise within the European research area.
The delegation also visited the TRIGA research reactor and the Nuclear Technology Training Centre, where demonstrations related to radioactivity and nuclear energy were presented. At the conclusion of the visit, Matej Tonin expressed his appreciation for the Institute’s research achievements and its state-of-the-art research infrastructure.
