IFIGENEIA is a Horizon Europe project aimed at establishing a sustainable European framework for the production and application of radioisotopes using advanced linear accelerator (LINAC) technology. The project addresses the growing demand for radioisotopes in nuclear medicine and explores LINAC-based production as a flexible, safe and environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional production methods. Three interconnected Excellence Hubs in Greece, Slovenia and Cyprus bring together research organisations, universities, healthcare institutions, industry, public authorities and civil society. The project covers the design of a LINAC dedicated to radioisotope production, development and investigation of radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals, and applications in diagnostics, therapy and theranostics. It also includes education and training, business and investment planning, technology transfer and mentoring activities for the Western Balkans. Through cooperation with internationally recognised institutions such as CERN, DKFZ and GSI, IFIGENEIA aims to strengthen European expertise and research capacity in accelerator technologies, nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceutical development and to support the long-term translation of scientific results into healthcare and other societal applications.
