PRIMER DOZA 2026 Exercise

06.10.2026

The F-2 Department, ELME, and SVPIS organized the 13th intercomparison measurements of dose rate, PRIMER DOZA, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at the JSI Reactor Centre. The exercise is intended for organizations and individuals from Slovenia and abroad that carry out radiation practices or operate in the field of protection against ionizing radiation and emergency preparedness. The purpose of this exercise is to enable organizations and individuals from Slovenia and abroad, who perform various measurements with dose rate meters, to test their knowledge and equipment in various tasks related to the detection of radioactive sources, exchange experiences, and upgrade their knowledge and working procedures through the mutual comparison of results.

The first set of tasks in the exercise included dose rate measurements in the field of a Cs-137 source with an activity of approximately 2 GBq, which participants performed with handheld meters at various distances from the source, as well as the measurement of the natural background dose rate. The second set of tasks involved searching for sources hidden in barrels. The third set of tasks comprised mapping the dose rate at measuring points within a designated area with simulated radioactive contamination, created by sources hidden on the ground. The fourth set involved calculating the activity of americium Am-241 by measuring the dose rate at a selected distance from the source. In the fifth set of tasks, participants had to use dose rate measurements to first calculate the position of an unknown source inside a horizontally placed pipe, and then, using additional measurements with a lead plate for shielding, also estimate which source it was. A large number of easier and more difficult tasks required intensive and focused work from the participants, some calculation skills, and a certain degree of improvisation.

This year as well, the intercomparison measurements of dose rate were organized separately from the intercomparison measurements of radioactive source activity using gamma spectrometry. The measurements were attended by more than 70 representatives from approximately 20 different organizations from Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, and the Czech Republic. The exercise participants included: JSI, Ames, ARAO, DEHI RKB, FURS, GB Ljubljana, GB Koper, GARS Jesenice, PGE Celje, PGE Velenje, PGD Kamnik, the Special Police Unit, the Slovenian Armed Forces, RKB Celje, RKB EHI, Landespolizeidirektion Kärnten from Austria, EKOTEH, IMI and IRB from Croatia, and SURO from the Czech Republic.
