The study investigates how tea plants (Camellia sinensis) detoxify and accumulate fluoride by examining the role of aluminum in reducing fluoride toxicity and transport. Using advanced elemental imaging techniques, the authors show that aluminum limits fluoride movement to the shoots and promotes the formation of stable aluminum–fluoride complexes that are localized primarily in the epidermis of roots and leaves, thereby protecting the plant from fluoride-induced damage. These findings provide new insights into the physiological mechanisms underlying fluoride detoxification and accumulation in tea plants.
