ELME Participation in the Sector Exercise – LOKS 2024

On Saturday, November 30, 2024, the Ecological Laboratory with a mobile unit (ELME) participated in the Sector Exercise LOKS 2024, organized by the firefighters of the Ljubljana Fire Department. The exercise took place in the LOKS Warehouses, located on Letališka cesta, in the east of the Municipality of Ljubljana. The assumption was that the storm damaged several buildings, and lightning also started a fire in one of them. According to the scenario, several people were injured, and, during the intervention, firefighters also found a suspicious container with radioactive material. 125 firefighters from the Ljubljana Fire Association and the Ljubljana Fire Brigade intervened in the exercise with 21 vehicles. Due to the risk of ionizing radiation, the ELME Mobile Radiological Laboratory with three members and one vehicle also intervened. During the exercise, ELME carried out contamination measurements of the responders and victims, measured the radiation intensity in the immediate vicinity of the radioactive source, assessed the level of danger, and participated in the decontamination and remediation of the source. Boštjan Črnič, Thomas Brenzik (SVPIS), and Anže Jazbec participated in the exercise as an intervention team. Miha Mihovilovič was present at the exercise as an observer.
