Publication in Acta Materialia, one of the world's most important journals in the field of materials science

Colleague Doc. Dr Sabina Markelj and colleagues from all over Europe published a breakthrough article on the formation and development of damage in the crystal structure of tungsten during bombardment with accelerated ions. Due to its properties, this material is a key candidate for the inner protective side of the walls of fusion reactors. Accelerated tungsten ions with an energy of about 10 MeV were used for the bombardment as well, since such an experiment best simulates the consequences of bombardment with neutrons - they will regularly hit the walls during the operation of the reactor. An important result of the article was also the confirmation of the C-RBS (Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry in channelling configuration) measurement method as suitable for investigating the nature of defects in the material.
