Update on JSI ion accelerator upgrade

The tandem ion accelerator “Tandetron,” the only research accelerator in Slovenia, is the heart of the infrastructural research center “Microanalytical Center” (MIC), which operates within the Infrastructure Program of the Jožef Stefan Institute. The upgrade process is underway since two weeks.

In the second timelapse, the insertion of the acceleration tube (consisting of segmented electrodes) into main accelerator tank is being recorded. After the insertion, the cavity is aligned with both ion sources and high energy magnet. Towards the end of the timelapse, the system is temporarily assembled by inserting the high voltage 3MV power supply enclosure. The work continues today as planned.

The second timelapse shows the insertion of the segmented-electrode acceleration tube into the main JSI ion-accelerator tank during the upgrade.

The upgrade of the IJS ion accelerator is underway

The only research accelerator in Slovenia is being upgraded. With the new 3-MV accelerator unit, the Tandetron will provide a 50% higher voltage, opening up entirely new research areas. The installation is proceeding according to plan, the old components have already been removed, and researchers will begin using the upgraded accelerator at the beginning of 2026.

PRIMER DOZA 2025

On 19 November 2025, we conducted a large-scale exercise, PRIMER DOZA, at the IJS Reactor Centre. The exercise was dedicated to comparative measurements of ionizing radiation dose rate and to the exchange of knowledge between Slovenian and international experts. Participants completed five sets of demanding tasks, including measurements in a Cs-137 source field, searching for hidden sources, dose-rate mapping, and determining the activity and location of radioactive sources. More than 90 representatives from 28 organizations across six countries took part, confirming the growing interest in this type of professional testing.
