An Article in the Influential Nature Physics Journal

13.08.2024

Dr Špela Krušič and  Dr Matjaž Žitnik, both from the F2 department, together with co-authors published an article where they report on the formation and behavior of non-equilibrium "warm dense matter", which is formed when strong laser light with a wavelength of 1.3 nm passes through 100 nm copper foil. Short bursts of light around the L3 edge were generated by the European XFEL free electron laser, the experiment took place at the SCS beamline. The problem of dense hot matter occurs in astrophysics, planetary science, and fusion research in inertial confinement, the results of this study can be used for comparisons of theoretical simulations of non-equilibrium electronic structures. More about the experiment here.
