Together with colleagues from the Rudjer Bošković Institute in Zagreb, the sensitivity of the characteristic X-ray emission of the Kα spectral line to the chemical bonding of titanium (Ti) and chromium (Cr) in various compounds was studied. The measurements were performed at our Microanalytical Center, the targets were excited with a 2 MeV proton beam, and the X-ray emission was analyzed with a high-resolution crystal spectrometer. X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) after excitation with synchrotron light has recently been used as a method that enables the analysis of the local spin of atom in 3d metal compounds, the best resolution is achieved by measuring the Kβ spectral line. The sensitivity of the Kα emission spectra is lower and it mainly provides the determination of the oxidation state, but due to its significantly higher intensity, it enables analysis even in a small laboratory using laboratory excitation sources.
