Elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA) is one of the few methods that can be used to detect hydrogen isotopes on materials. The probing beam, typically He or Li, is hitting the sample surface under glancing angle and recoils out particles that are lighter from the probing beam. The energy of the recoiled particles is detected with a silicon detector and from the kinematic factors one can resolve different mass species and obtain also their depth distribution. The candidate would measure the cross section between Lithium and Deuterium in the ERDA configuration, i.e. yield of recoiled deuterium at different Li energies. The cross section is vital for near surface studies of hydrogen interaction with materials.
