The article discusses the design and characterization of innovative bismuth germanate (BGO) scintillation detectors, used to filter out the Compton continuum from the spectra, acquired by high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors. A fully functional DEGAS-BGO-BC cluster was designed and tested both with gamma-ray sources (60Co and 152Eu) and during a DESPEC experiment at GSI/FAIR. The results were compared to simulations and were found to be mostly in agreement with the latter. Additionally, the detector was thoroughly characterized so that its operation was fully understood.
