Attendance at IAEA Technical Meeting

09.12.2020

Members of F2 department Esther Punzon-Quijorna, Katarina Vogel-Mikuš, Primož Pelicon and Paula Pongrac attended an IAEA Technical meeting on Imaging Using Ionizing Radiation to Address Biological Challenges organized by the IAEA last week. Dr Esther Punzon-Quijorna lectured on the aplicability of the micro-PIXE method for improving biomedical diagnostics (Micro-PIXE for improving bio-medical diagnostics: from elemental imaging on human tissue to element mass inventories in single cells), Prof. Dr Katarina Vogel-Mikuš on the challenges of multi-modal imaging in plants (Challenges in the multimodal imaging of metal-stressed plants), and Doc. Dr Paula Pongrac on the challenges of imaging the metabolic and elemental distribution in plant cells (Challenges in the Imaging cell-types in plants using correlative ion beam techniques MeV-SIMS and micro-PIXE at the Jožef Stefan Institute). The talks were followed by an intensive discussion on the future of ionizing radiation imaging and the identification of biological problems that can be addressed with existing techniques.
